Solutions provided by our hand surgeons at Orthopedic Associates of Long Island

istock 862021206 1 Your hand and wrist are vital to everyday function, and when problems arise, they may require attention. The providers at Orthopedic Associates of Long Island are dedicated to providing patients with surgical and nonsurgical solutions for the hand and wrist.

Below are just a few of the more common conditions that might result in treatment or hand surgery by our team:

  • Fractures in the wrist – when a bone in the body has been fractured, it often requires repositioning and casting. Patients who have fractures in the wrist or hand will want to have a series of x-rays performed to get a definitive diagnosis, and then work with their doctor to heal the area if needed with casting and other techniques.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome – patients who work in fields where repetitive hand and finger motions are required may deal with a condition called carpal tunnel syndrome which can cause pain in the hand and up through the arms. Later stages of this condition may benefit from carpal tunnel surgery.
  • Hand arthritis – arthritis in the hands can significantly limit patients who are involved in hobbies or activities that require the fingers and hands to function at their best. Arthritis is common in older patients and can be addressed with surgical and nonsurgical solutions.
  • Dupuytren’s contracture – patients with Dupuytren’s contracture might notice the unintentional bending of one or more fingers. This condition often develops over time and is caused by a knot in the tissue underneath the skin of the hands. This deformity is often improved with hand surgery.

Do I need surgery?

Some conditions may be improved with physical therapy and over-the-counter pain medications. However, if the condition is more severe, it may require surgery to address. Our team will evaluate patients to decide the best course of action for effective treatment.
