Foot and Ankle Conditions We Treat
At OALI, we treat a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, each with a tailored approach to care. Below are some of the conditions we specialize in, along with detailed information about their symptoms, causes, and treatment options.
Achilles tendonitis is a common condition among athletes and active individuals. It is characterized by pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon, often exacerbated in the morning or after physical activity. Causes include overuse, sudden increases in activity intensity, tight calf muscles, and improper footwear. Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and pain through rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications. Physical therapy is crucial to strengthen and stretch the Achilles tendon, and custom orthotic devices can help reduce stress on the tendon. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair the damaged tendon.
Foot sprains and strains occur due to the overstretching or tearing of ligaments or muscles, often resulting from sports injuries, falls, or accidents. Symptoms include swelling, bruising, tenderness, and pain when bearing weight. Treatment typically involves the R.I.C.E method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) to manage symptoms, followed by immobilization with braces or casts to support the injured area. Physical therapy is essential for rehabilitation, and in severe cases, surgical repair may be required.
Cavovarus foot deformity is characterized by high arches and clawed toes, leading to instability and frequent ankle sprains. It can be caused by neurological conditions like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, traumatic injuries, or congenital deformities. Treatment options include custom orthotics to provide support and improve foot alignment, bracing to enhance stability, and physical therapy for strengthening and stretching exercises. In more severe cases, surgical correction may be necessary to realign the foot.
Flat feet, or fallen arches, can cause pain and swelling along the inside of the ankle, especially after prolonged standing or activity. This condition can be hereditary, result from posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, or be associated with arthritis. Treatment includes supportive footwear with proper arch support, custom orthotic inserts, and physical therapy exercises to strengthen the muscles supporting the arch. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be needed to reconstruct the arch.
Bunions are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of your big toe, causing pain and swelling. They are often hereditary or caused by wearing tight shoes. Our practice offers minimally invasive bunion surgery, which involves small incisions to realign the toe and remove the bunion. Post-surgery care includes follow-up appointments and physical therapy to ensure proper healing and restore function.
Turf toe is a sprain of the big toe joint resulting from hyperextension, commonly seen in athletes playing on artificial turf. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and restricted movement at the base of the big toe. Treatment involves rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications to manage pain and reduce swelling. Taping or bracing the toe can provide support and limit movement during healing. Physical therapy helps restore strength and flexibility.
A Lisfranc injury involves damage to the midfoot, which can result from direct trauma or twisting injuries. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight. Treatment often starts with immobilization using a cast or boot to stabilize the foot, along with pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications. Physical therapy aids in restoring mobility and strength, and severe cases may require surgical fixation of the bones and joints.
PTTD is a condition where the posterior tibial tendon becomes inflamed or torn, leading to pain along the inner side of the ankle and foot, swelling, and flattening of the arch. Causes include overuse, injury, and inflammatory conditions. Treatment focuses on supporting the arch with orthotic devices, bracing to reduce strain on the tendon, and physical therapy to strengthen the posterior tibial tendon. Surgery may be necessary for repairing or reconstructing the damaged tendon in advanced cases.
