David R. Swanson III, MD is a board-eligible and fellowship-trained Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Sports Medicine, Joint Replacement Surgery, and General Orthopedic Trauma.
After graduating with the distinction of Honors from Gordon College, Dr. Swanson earned his medical degree from the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. Upon completion of his MD, Dr. Swanson was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, which recognizes only the top 10% of medical students across the United States.
Dr. Swanson underwent rigorous training in Orthopedic Surgery during residency at Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was elected and served as Executive Chief Resident in his final year.
He was subsequently selected to pursue advanced fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA. During his time in Boston, Dr. Swanson served as one of the team physicians for the 17-time World Champion Boston Celtics, where he provided care to some of the highest level athletes in the world. In addition to his experience as a professional team physician, Dr. Swanson has provided care to a broad spectrum of athletes, from Division I athletes at Bentley University and Stony Brook University, to collegiate club hockey, to junior varsity and junior high football teams.
Dr. Swanson is an author of numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics including athletic injuries of the hip and ankle, surgical techniques related to the lower extremity, shoulder arthroplasty, and geriatric hip fractures. He has a particular interest in ortho-biologics, and he wrote his Masters Thesis on the role of Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Dr. Swanson has presented his research at various regional and national conferences, including most recently at the prestigious annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is a member of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS).
Dr. Swanson’s passion for Orthopedics stems largely from the creative solutions and the unique technology it employs. He understands first-hand how discouraging it can be to feel sidelined. His experience as a patient, physician and dedicated researcher in the field has enabled him to provide his patients with the care that they need to get back to sports, work or simply to achieve the quality of life that they deserve. Dr. Swanson encourages all of his patients to carefully and realistically consider their goals so that they can work together to find the treatment plan tailored perfectly to their needs.
