What Is Scoliosis?

The team at Orthopedic Associates of Long Island in New York is dedicated to helping patients achieve better health and wellness. This includes evaluation of certain procedures that can impact one’s overall health and quality of life, including scoliosis.

Understanding scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature that can occur to the spine. Approximately 3% of adolescents have scoliosis, though it can often go undiagnosed until problems arise. This sideways curve typically occurs in childhood due to a growth spurt, and can be caused by conditions such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy. However, there is no specific cause or known reason why scoliosis may develop in one person and not another.

In most situations, scoliosis is minor. Unfortunately, in cases where scoliosis is severe, treatment may be needed to keep the condition from being debilitating to a patient. When the spinal curve is misaligned, t can reduce the space in the chest cavity that can make it difficult for the lungs to work properly. Patients may also experience pain and discomfort when exercising or performing certain activities because of the severe misalignment of the spine.

What are symptoms of scoliosis?

In most situations, a moderate to severe case of scoliosis may be detected due to imperfections in the alignment of other parts of the body. A patient may have uneven shoulders, more prominent shoulder blades, or even one hip that sits higher than the other. Ribs may also protrude out more on one side versus the other, which may be indicative of scoliosis. Patients who have scoliosis may also experience back problems and damage to the heart and lungs due to the rib cage pressing against these organs. Treatment is required to help restore health and wellness.
