Frequently asked questions regarding the recovery from hip replacement surgery

Patients who are considering hip replacement surgery often have a lot of questions. They want to learn more about the procedure to determine if it is the right choice for their situation. At Orthopedic Associates of Long Island, we work with patients in the area to educate them about their situation and decide if their needs can be met with joint replacement surgery.

Frequently asked questions on hip replacement

How long should I plan for recovery?

Not everyone heals from a surgical procedure in the same timeframe. However, most patients can expect to be limited to using crutches or a walker for approximately one month after surgery. After that, a cane can be used for several weeks until an individual returns to daily, normal function without assistive devices. The entire process can take roughly three months or longer depending on overall health and age.

Can I dislocate my hip?

Yes, hip dislocation can occur. This is when the ball of the joint comes out of the socket. With proper dislocation precautions, most patients will not experience this problem during their recovery time. Our doctor will advise patients on certain precautions to take, such as avoiding flexing more than 90 degrees and avoid excessive bending of the hip and hip joints.

When will my stitches be removed?

Our practice uses absorbable stitches, which will not need to be removed by you or a professional.

How long should I wait before showering?

We encourage patients to wait approximately five days postop before taking a shower to keep the incision area dry for proper healing.

Do I need a physical therapy?

Our team will offer patients a referral to an outpatient physical therapist. A physical therapist can play a vital role in recovery, allowing patients to reduce their recovery time and recover function and range of motion faster. A physical therapist will visit either at the hospital, in your recovery center, or at your home for several times a week. A list of appropriate exercises will be recommended to perform daily to aid in recovery.
