Common shoulder surgeries

At Orthopedic Associates of Long Island, our professions are ready and willing to assist patients in the community with their orthopedic needs. We see many patients who are struggling with pain, inflammation, and loss of mobility in many areas of the body, especially the shoulder area. This area can be damaged or injured easily depending on the activities a patient participates in, especially sports such as hockey, football, or baseball.

What should surgeries are available at OALI?

Below are the two more common shoulder surgeries provided in our practice:

  • Shoulder arthroscopy – shoulder arthroscopies are often used to look at a joint through a special device with a camera inside the body. A small incision is made for the camera to be inserted, and the imaging is viewed on a television by the surgeon. This treatment may be used as a diagnosis of a condition, but may also be used for repair of the shoulder joint and area. It may be used for bone spur removal, removal of inflamed tissue, or rotator cuff repair.
  • Shoulder replacement – patients who have had continued problems with their shoulder joint, as well as pain or decreased mobility, may require a full replacement of the shoulder ball and socket joints. Most patients with cartilage loss or damage will benefit from should replacement, especially if they are dealing with continued pain, weakness of the shoulder, and chronic stiffness.

Which treatment is best for me?

The doctors of Orthopedic Associates of Long Island will need to have patients undergo a thorough evaluation and examination by our doctors to determine what their primary concern is and what is the best course of treatment. X-rays and other diagnostics are done to get an idea of the problem at hand. Our doctors can then make recommendations as to treatment options based on this information obtained.
