What is Causing My Hip Pain?

Hispanic bearded man with low back pain Hip pain can be debilitating and wreak havoc on your everyday tasks. Hip pain becomes even more of a challenge when you aren’t sure of its cause. Hip pain doesn’t have to remain a mystery. Here are some factors causing hip pain and how you can treat them.

Hypercalcemia

Calcium is the substance that helps strengthen our bones. Trying to put as much as possible into our bodies can be tempting, but too much calcium can do more harm than good. Hypercalcemia is a condition that causes calcium levels in your blood to rise above normal levels. The calcium in the joints can weaken the bones, causing pain and joint instability.

Hypercalcemia can be caused by

  • Cancer
  • Medications
  • Overuse of calcium supplements
  • Overuse of Vitamin D supplements

Arthritis

Hip pain is one of the calling cards of arthritis.

Arthritis is a condition that affects nearly 25% of U.S adults, and these numbers increase with age. Arthritis in the hip can be painful and slowly take a toll on your quality of life as it progresses.

Age

Hip pain can be a byproduct of your body’s changes with age. Over time, aging can cause chronic pain in the joints, including your hips. Also, the cartilage in your joints starts to break down as you age, and the cushion between the bones begins wearing down. Decreasing joint cartilage can cause stiffness, limited range of motion, and pain.

Hip Bursitis

Another cause of hip pain you may experience can come from hip bursitis, a condition where bursa sacs in the hips become inflamed and irritated. Hip bursitis can be painful because the bursa sacs help protect your bones from grinding against one another, and inflamed bursa sacs aren’t as effective at preventing friction between the bones.

What you can do for your hips

Many things can cause you to suffer from hip pain, but there are ways you can bring yourself some relief. Some methods you can try include over-the-counter pain medications, physical therapy, and water aerobics. But if conservative methods aren’t effective, medical intervention such as surgery may be necessary. Treatment methods depend on the nature of your symptoms and your doctor’s advice.
