One of the largest joints in the human body is the hip joint. In addition to being substantial in size, it is also an integral part of movement of the body each and every day. When patients are dealing with problems of the hip joint, such as restriction and pain, they may wonder when it is a good time to consider hip replacement surgery. At Orthopedic Associates of Long Island, our professionals may recommend hip replacement as a last resort when patients are no longer able to find relief with more conservative treatment and management options.
Am I a candidate for hip replacement surgery?
When patients experience pain and discomfort of the hip joint that significantly limits their ability to not only participate in the activities they enjoy, but just achieve the movement needed to get through the day, hip replacement surgery should be discussed. Choosing to undergo invasive procedure is never a simple choice, but when conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or trauma cause significant loss in the hip’s range of motion and strength, it might be the only option left.
What can I do after my procedure?
As with any surgery, there is time needed for healing and recovery. We encourage patients to rest as needed, take medication as directed, and only participate in the activities they have been cleared to participate in by their orthopedist. Light activity can often resume for several weeks, until normal activity can be achieved after anywhere from six to 12 weeks post-operative. Patients may also be advised to practice certain range of motion exercises at home, or may be recommended to a physical therapist to aid in recovery and improving function of the hip and body movements.
